First Responder Disaster Response Training
On-demand 2+ hour
video training for mental health providers!

Far too often, people in the first responder line of work are reluctant to engage in necessary mental health treatment out of a concern that clinicians won’t ‘get it’. This training aims to help therapists understand the nuances of working in public safety and a complicated healthcare system, especially both before, during, and after deploying for disaster response, and the compassion fatigue, burnout, and vicarious trauma that often result.

If you are a therapist in Western North Carolina or in the LA Metro area (places impacted by Hurricane Helene or wildfires throughout LA), please scroll down for a coupon code to register for FREE.

Please note that proceeds from this training will be split between supporting online mental health treatment in WNC and being donated to LA based nonprofits providing care for those displaced by the wildfires.

A personal note from Jill Williams, LCSW

Western North Carolina, the place I have called home for my entire adult life, is currently in the midst of the worst natural disaster to ever occur in the known history of the area.

I myself was able to safely evacuate with my family out of Asheville, and I am truly incredibly lucky to be alive. And still, after all of this, we love these mountains.

I know that our WNC region has years of recovery ahead of us, and I want to be here to help the helpers and to support our community both in the immediate aftermath of this devastating storm, and on the long road ahead.

I would like to express the deepest gratitude to Kelly Lynch, LCSW, EMT, CPT, PN-1 (retired EMT and author of the Amazon bestselling book "F*ck The Rules") for providing this training opportunity for our local WNC therapists at no charge, as well as to therapists around the country as a fundraiser for survivors and our local therapist community.
(Locals, pleas scroll down for coupon codes.)

100% of proceeds raised by this training will go to communities and clinicians impacted by this disaster. Thank you for caring about us, it truly means so much.

*** UPDATE January 9, 2025 ***
In response to the wildfires raging through the Los Angeles area, this training is being offered free of charge to all clinicians in the greater LA metro area, and any other clinicians impacted by the wildfires, and we will donate a portion of proceeds raised by this training to local LA nonprofits that are supporting people displaced by the fires, in addition to continuing our support for folx impacted by hurricane Helene here locally in Western North Carolina.

ABOUT THE TRAINING

This training consists of a 2+ hour on-demand video replay of our live training event, which you can watch at any time, at your own pace. There are additional "homework" recommendations provided so you can engage in further learning to increase your competency and confidence in supporting First Responders.

This is an introductory-level training for mental health professionals on supporting first responders who are either in the middle of or returning from disaster response. This training also includes information about the WNC region, including it's culture and how this unique terrain creates barrier to rescue and clean-up.

Please know that even if you do not live in NC, we are receiving First Responder support from around the country so you may have people return to your own community after their deployment in need of support.

This training will also be incredibly beneficial outside of the WNC area as we continue to see an increase in weather related disasters nationwide, requiring boots on the ground efforts from First Responders, who deserve culturally competent support from clinicians like you.

What you will learn:

* The nuances of working in public safety before, during and after a deployment to a disaster

* An understanding of burnout, compassion fatigue, and trauma in First Responders

* Why responders are often reluctant to engage in treatment and how you can build rapport

* Common clinical issues, best practices and interventions, and how to address unique psychosocial stressors

* What is the OODA loop and why does it matter? What are Coopers colors and how do they keep responders safe?

* Better understand the unique culture of First Responders ... why is there so much dark humor? Why do they want to take care of you, their therapist?

Kelly Lynch is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, retired EMT, Personal Trainer, and Nutrition Coach. She became an EMT in 2003 and worked in commercial EMS as an EMT and FTO for ten years prior to becoming a therapist. Kelly has been a therapist for over 15 years and specializes in Acute Stress and Post Traumatic Stress Injuries in EMS professionals.

She opened Turning Point Wellness in 2014 with the goal of normalizing mental wellness in public safety, changing the stigma of asking for help and increasing access and availability of appropriate support services to all professional and volunteer first responders.

She is a subject matter expert on EMS-related issues and has consulted with NAEMT during the development and implementation of their Mental Health Resiliency Officer program.

Kelly has also provided expert testimony in Connecticut that supported the state PTSD bill to include EMS personnel and provides national supervision to clinicians working with EMS personnel and firefighters.

Kelly also owns The GRIIT Project, where she speaks nationally and internationally on topics related to mindset and problem-solving, pulling not only from her experience as a clinician but also from her experience as an EMT. Through her methods, called GRIIT and POWER, Kelly teaches people how to practice authenticity and find personal and professional alignment through the power of self-leadership.

Her first book about her methods, F*ck the Rules, was published in February 2024 and quickly became an Amazon Bestseller.

Jill Williams, LCSW (she/her) is a therapist, group practice owner, NASW-NC Certified Clinical Supervisor, LCMHCA Qualified Supervisor, and owner of Mental Health Masterminds, which provides trainings to support clinicians in feeling more competent and confident in their work.

Jill has 15 years of direct clinical experience working with children and adults of all ages in settings ranging from a locked inpatient psychiatric unit, to the Emergency Department, to schools, to offices, to client's homes, to McDonald's parking lots.

Jill has trained with First Responders and Law Enforcement Officers to provide Critical Incident Stress Management in the wake of tragedy and has worked with EMTs and Firefighters in the aftermath of fatalities and disaster events.

Jill provides consultation, training, and coaching for other mental health clinicians looking to gain more competence and confidence in their role as a therapist.

Jill is also a 20+ resident of Asheville, NC and is super fucking devastated that her community has been so deeply impacted by this disaster ... and really guilty that her family got out safely and is currently living elsewhere while trying to figure out what is next.

Jill is also incredibly grateful to Kelly for providing her expertise and guidance in this area as our First Responders deserve competent, compassionate support in the coming days, weeks, and months.
